Contemporary architecture with care for the past.

125 Architects is an RIAS Conservation Accredited practice working across Stirling and central Scotland, specialising in listed buildings, sensitive historic settings and carefully judged contemporary interventions.

Our work in Stirling sits naturally alongside projects throughout the Central Belt, where historic towns, estate settings and conservation areas demand a thoughtful, well‑evidenced design approach.

Conservation expertise, embedded in the process | Dundee Architects

125 Architects is led by a conservation‑accredited architect with a track record of award‑winning built work. Conservation is not treated as a constraint to overcome, but as a framework within which good contemporary architecture can emerge.

Typically, our approach includes:

  • Careful assessment of architectural and historic significance

  • Clear justification for change, proportionate to the building and setting

  • Early dialogue with planning and conservation officers

  • Precise, well‑reasoned drawings and supporting statements

  • Contemporary interventions that are legible, restrained and confident

This methodology is particularly effective in Stirling, where decision‑making places significant weight on the quality of analysis as well as design resolution.

An architect experienced working in Stirling.

Stirling’s architectural character is layered and closely protected — from Georgian and Victorian townhouses to villas, former service buildings and rural estate structures. Successful projects here depend on clarity of thinking, an understanding of significance and the confidence to introduce contemporary architecture where it is genuinely appropriate.

We are frequently appointed to projects involving:

  • Listed building alterations and repairs (Categories A, B and C).

  • Development within conservation areas.

  • Contemporary extensions to historic houses.

  • Coach houses, courtyard buildings and ancillary accommodation.

  • Planning‑led design in sensitive or highly scrutinised locations.

Our work avoids stylistic pastiche. Instead, we focus on proportion, material quality and detail — qualities that age well and are consistently supported by planners and conservation officers.

Abercromby Place | Stirling

Located within Stirling’s historic urban fabric, Abercromby Place demonstrates our ability to work sensitively within even the most sensitive of conservation area settings.

The project involved careful consideration of scale, proportion and materiality, allowing contemporary extension to a listed home within the Kings Park Conservation Area, without undermining the character of the original building or its setting. The resulting architecture is calm and precise, enhancing spatial quality while remaining deferential to its context.

Abercromby Place reflects our experience of working constructively with Stirling Council’s planning and conservation teams, translating policy and guidance into well‑resolved built form.

The Coach House | Falkirk

The Coach House is a multi award‑winning contemporary home within the grounds of a substantial Victorian villa, located close to Stirling and within a comparable historic and planning context.

Modest in size but ambitious in intent, the project reinterprets the traditional coach house typology as a courtyard‑focused dwelling. Two large sliding window walls open directly onto the courtyard, deliberately blurring the boundary between inside and outside.

The project received multiple design awards, including the Saltire Society Housing Design Award, with judges describing it as “an exemplar of how to build appropriately in the grounds of substantial Victorian villas.” It has been referenced as a benchmark for contemporary architecture in sensitive historic settings.

Arnothill | Falkirk

Arnothill is a sensitive and award-winning residential project set within the Arnothill and Dollar Park Conservation Area, immediately south of Stirling. The brief involved transforming a cluster of long-disused outbuildings within the garden grounds of a historic property into a cohesive, contemporary family home that responds carefully to its heritage setting.

The design reused original masonry structures, introducing modern extensions that creates a generous open-plan living, kitchen and dining space with strong connections to the south-facing garden. Thoughtful detailing — including a glazed rooflight, well-calibrated proportions and a subtle material palette of rendered masonry, quartz zinc and timber — ensures the new dwelling feels both contemporary and grounded in context.

Arnothill shows how sensitive architectural intervention can balance historic fabric with modern spatial quality, enhancing everyday living while respecting the conservation area’s character.

Contemporary extensions in historic settings.

Many Stirling projects involve extending or adapting existing buildings rather than replacing them. We are particularly interested in extensions that:

  • Are clearly contemporary yet carefully scaled

  • Improve energy performance and comfort

  • Use durable, high‑quality materials

  • Create light‑filled, well‑proportioned spaces

Rather than mimic historic architecture, our work relies on clarity and restraint — an approach that allows both old and new to coexist without confusion.
