Beautifully crafted single-storey extension by 125Architects

Nestled in the historic town of Linlithgow, this project on Clarendon Road represents a thoughtful and modern intervention in a traditional context. Our clients sought to expand their home in a way that maximised their connection with their garden, creating a light-filled, open-plan living space that feels both generous and intimate. Our design responds to that ambition with a single-storey rear extension, careful material choice, and architectural simplicity.

Seamless connection to nature.

By extending the rear to its full width, the new addition dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, giving the sense that the garden has become another room. A strip of roof glazing draws in daylight, allowing light to penetrate deep into the plan and animating the space with natural movement throughout the day. The result is not just more living space, but living that breathes.

Design that warms and welcomes.

To bring warmth and tactility, the canopy is clad in a refined combination of grey zinc and Siberian larch timber. This material pairing gives a contemporary edge while keeping a natural, grounded feel. The zinc fascia lends a clean, minimal profile, while the timber soffits and reveals offer texture and a tactile quality that makes the addition feel both modern and inviting.

A quiet retreat.

We created a sheltered external area under the canopy — a private, calm space for sitting or gathering, even when conditions outdoors are less than ideal. It’s a sun trap by design, offering a retreat where the family can enjoy their garden year-round, protected, yet connected.

Lifestyle focused architecture.

Our clients say it best:

“Our home is filled with light, and we feel like our garden is now an extra room.”

That sentence captures why we do what we do. For us, architecture is not just about form—it's about shaping life positively. By rethinking this home to embrace openness, light, and the landscape, we’ve created a space that elevates the everyday, making routine moments feel just a little more special.

Why this matters.

  • Thoughtful extension: The full-width rear build expands living space without overcomplicating the home’s architectural language. It transforms the percepction of the once tired property from the rear.

  • Natural light: Roof glazing gives the interior a bright, airy quality, even deep into the plan.

  • Material sensitivity: Zinc and timber combine durability with warmth, giving the addition a timeless, tactile feel.

  • Indoor-outdoor flow: The new volume creates a strong, holistic link between indoors and garden.

  • Private outdoor space: The canopy’s overhang offers a sheltered, tranquil exterior zone.

‘Our home is filled with light and we feel like our garden is now an extra room.’
