Private Client
Home for every generation.
At Haining Place in Murieston, near Livingston, this thoughtfully designed annex extends the warmth and character of the existing family home — while creating a completely self-contained space that supports multi-generational living. Our clients came to us with a clear and heartfelt ambition: to give their family flexibility and independence, without ever having to leave the place they love.
Simple and independent living - together.
The new extension provides a one-bedroom sanctuary with its own bathroom and a generous open-plan living and kitchen area. It’s designed to be fully independent — giving a family member their own space — yet the proximity means they remain part of the larger home, sharing closeness, memories and daily life.
Architecture with purpose and elegance.
We shaped the building around a striking butterfly roof, rendered in warm red-zinc. This roof appears to float above a solid brick base, with a glazed clerestory allowing natural light to filter in, creating a sense of openness and calm. The red-zinc finish subtly echoes the brickwork of the existing house, while carefully selected buff-brick tones reflect its rendered surfaces, allowing the new and old parts of the home to speak the same visual language.
At the rear, the annex opens out to a shared outdoor patio, where family members can gather, unwind and connect — whether it’s for morning coffee, evening conversations or simply enjoying fresh air together.
Harmonious material palette.
Every element is considered to strengthen the relationship between the new and original building:
Red-zinc cladding: bold, contemporary, and complementary to the existing brick.
Buff brick plinth: robust and grounded, harmonising with the home’s rendered walls.
Glazed clerestory: brings in daylight, reduces the visual weight of the structure, and offers subtle architectural interest.
Future-proof and thoughtful.
This isn’t just an extension — it’s a future-proof investment in family life. By adding a discreet but distinct home to the property, the family benefits from flexibility without sacrificing togetherness. It allows for ageing in place, shared living with adult children, or simply the comfort of knowing loved ones are near while retaining their own space.
This is a model for life we are seeing more often as a practice, where as we all live longer families look to care for each other in the later parts of life.
