Craigeuan Walled Garden: Elegant rural living in Crieff.
Nestled in the heart of the Perthshire countryside, the Craigeuan Walled Garden at Milton of Cultoquhey offers an exceptional opportunity for bespoke family living. Formerly part of the historic Cultoquhey Estate — whose centerpiece is the Category B listed Cultoquhey House by Sir Robert Smithe — this project reimagines a tranquil heritage setting for modern life.
A vision rooted in tradition.
When you come to us with a vision for a family retreat, we begin by listening carefully. For Craigeuan, our client sought two refined, new-build homes that honour the rich agricultural heritage of the site. We drew inspiration from timeless Scottish longhouses, creating single-storey dwellings with pitched, metal roofs and long, low profiles that sit gently within the landscape.
Thoughtful architecture that responds to landscape.
Our design weaves five repeating gable forms, each housing a primary living volume. The gables step down with the topography, minimising earthworks and preserving the natural flow of the grounds. A recessed single-storey link joins the structures, accommodating secondary spaces and circulation with humility.
The layout opens up to both south-and north-facing courtyards. To the south, the courtyards are active on three sides and span upper and lower levels, allowing daylight to flood triple-aspect living rooms while creating seamless indoor-outdoor connections. These spaces maximise the sweeping views across the countryside. To the north, quieter courtyards nestle against the walled boundary, forming intimate enclosed areas that house practical functions like car turning, service access and storage — all without interfering with the building’s elegant frontage.
Materials that ground and elevate.
We selected a restrained and meaningful palette to reflect both the building’s heritage and its surroundings. The primary gables are clad in locally sourced stone, grounding the homes in tradition. The roofs are in grey standing-seam zinc — sleek, durable, and low maintenance. Timber is introduced under sheltered areas, bringing warmth and tactility to the architecture. For the rear elevations, we used white self-coloured acrylic render, complemented with inset timber panels that echo the gable fronts.
Designing for comfort and function.
Every part of these homes has been shaped with your lifestyle in mind. The triple-aspect living rooms enjoy generous natural light and views. The courtyards enhance your connection to nature while offering practical spaces for everyday life — whether entertaining, relaxing, or simply enjoying quiet moments in the garden. The careful siting, materials, and structure all contribute to homes that feel timeless yet fresh, rooted in their place but unafraid to be contemporary.
A client-centred experience.
We believe in working collaboratively and openly — your needs and aspirations are at the centre of everything we do. For Craigeuan, we translated a personal vision into a compelling architectural narrative that delivers heritage, quality and long-term value. We guided our clients through the process from concept to build, combining our technical expertise with genuine care and creativity.
‘The team have done a great job in turning an idea into a reality!’
