At North Lodge, nestled in the peaceful suburb of Dechmont in West Lothian, 125Architects reimagined a traditional dwelling with a thoughtful and elegant extension that enhances daily living and brings light, warmth and connection to the home.
A light-filled, open-plan heart.
The design introduces single-storey extensions to both the front and rear of the house, opening up the space in a way that feels expansive but remains intimately connected to the original structure. To the front, an open-plan kitchen and dining area replaces an outdated conservatory. Here, the pitched roof soars upward, culminating in top-light glazing that bathes the room in natural daylight. The result is a lofty, bright living space — ideal for shared meals, entertaining, and family moments.
To the rear, the extension gives way to a generous utility room, thoughtfully positioned to serve the practical needs of modern family life without compromising character.
Respecting heritage, embracing nature.
The new pitched forms — both in the dining extension and the welcoming entrance canopy — draw inspiration from the existing stone gables, creating architectural continuity and harmony. This sensitive nod to the original building’s character helps the additions feel both fresh and rooted in place.
The exterior is clad in vertical larch, a natural, warm material that sits beautifully against the rugged stone. Abundant glazing provides a seamless visual connection to the garden, inviting the outdoors in and creating a lightness of presence. The contrast between timber and stone gives the building a refined yet grounded aesthetic.
Materiality & craftsmanship.
Choosing larch cladding was deliberate: it weathers naturally and matures gracefully over time, adding richness and texture to the home. Paired with the strong lines of the pitched roofs and generous glass, the design balances contemporary clarity with material warmth. The canopy over the front entrance not only makes a bold architectural statement, but also offers practical shelter and frames the home’s arrival point in a welcoming way.
The experience of living.
Inside, the seamless integration of the extension transforms how the house is used. The high-pitched volume and natural light in the dining space make everyday moments feel more uplifting and special. Whether you’re gathering around the table or simply enjoying quiet time in the utility room, the flow between rooms is intuitive and functional.
Outside, large glazed panels bring in views of the garden, reinforcing a strong connection to landscape — ideal for those who appreciate both indoor comfort and the tranquillity of nature.
A thoughtful approach.
This project reflects 125Architects’ commitment to sensitive, people-centred design. We believe architecture should respond to its context — both in terms of the physical structure and in terms of how people live. With North Lodge, we have shaped a home that not only looks beautiful, but also enhances everyday routines and relationships.
Why North Lodge works so well.
Contextual Harmony: Extensions are carefully scaled and aligned with the existing gables, preserving the original character.
Natural Light & Volume: High ceilings and roof glazing flood interiors with daylight, improving spatial quality.
Material Contrast: The use of vertical larch against stone creates a warm, tactile contrast that is visually striking yet sensitive.
Functional Living: The new layout gives clear, practical spaces for dining, entertaining, and utility, without feeling compartmentalised.
Connection to Nature: Glazed walls frame views and allow seamless interaction between indoor and outdoor life.
