A thoughtful, modern extension to a mid-century home.

Our Friars Way project in Linlithgow, West Lothian, is a sophisticated reimagining of an outdated 1960s extension. Commissioned by a retired architect, the brief was clear: retain the footprint of the existing structure to preserve the mature garden, while adding a new “sitooterie” — a peaceful outdoor seating space — on the opposite side of the house. The result is a seamless fusion of contemporary design and garden-centric living.

Design strategy: connecting inside and out.

By reconfiguring the layout, we created a central external patio, finished with reclaimed paving slabs. This patio is flush with the home’s internal floor level, forming a natural bridge between existing and new living spaces. The design encourages effortless in-and-out flow, fostering a sense of gathering and connection in the heart of the home.

To unify the old and the new, we embraced a wrapping architectural motif. A continuous quartz-zinc band ties around the extension, visually linking the existing structure with the new additions. It provides coherence and uniformity to the rear elevation of the home.

Materiality and craftsmanship.

We selected Staffordshire blue brick for the base course, grounding the extension with a timeless and robust aesthetic. Above this, the elevations are articulated in silicate render panels, offering a clean, contemporary finish. High-performance triple-glazed, aluminium-clad screens bring in abundant natural light, while ensuring thermal efficiency.

One standout feature is the frameless corner window, which elegantly opens the corner of the extension to panoramic garden views — an intentional design move that dissolves boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Upstairs, we updated the original house’s upper level with matching render and carefully designed new windows, giving the entire home a refreshed, coherent look.
