Whole house refurb and contemporary extension.
Grange View is a complete refurbishment and extension of a detached home on the eastern edge of the beautiful town of Linlithgow. The project transforms a conventional house into a light-filled, contemporary home that connects closely with its garden and setting. We provided full architectural services from concept to completion, including coordination of full project team and detailed input into the landscape design, ensuring the new spaces feel cohesive inside and out.
The existing house had generous proportions but limited connection to the garden and little natural light at its centre. The brief was to create a comfortable, uplifting home that felt more open, better connected and capable of adapting to modern family life. The reconfigured layout improves circulation and sightlines through the ground floor, while the new extension provides a calm, bright space to relax and enjoy views to the garden throughout the seasons.
Contemporary House Extension.
The new single-storey extension forms the focus of the home — a flexible living, kitchen, dining space designed for everyday use and informal gatherings. Large sliding glass doors open directly onto a terrace, creating an easy relationship between interior and exterior. A cantilevered canopy extends outward from the zinc-clad façade, providing sheltered outdoor space so the doors can remain open even when the weather is warm and wet. This creates a protected edge to the house and allows the threshold between inside and out to blur naturally.
A large rooflight above the seating area draws daylight deep into the interior, changing character as the light moves through the day. The combination of open glazing, warm materials and careful proportioning gives the space an inviting atmosphere that supports both quiet moments and sociable use.
Architectural materials and detailing.
The extension is defined by red zinc cladding, chosen to complement the tones of the existing tiled roof, window frames and timber fascias, while introducing a refined, contemporary contrast against crisp white render with minimal maintenance requirement.
Slim aluminium-framed glazing gives a clean, sharp edge to the elevations and frames views of the garden. Together, these materials establish a confident but sympathetic language that sits comfortably alongside the original home.
Internally, the finishes are soft and natural, creating a sense of continuity with the landscape beyond. Timber floors, painted wall finishes and a restrained colour palette add warmth and tactility, while allowing the quality of light to take precedence.
Connected living.
Grange View demonstrates how a carefully considered extension and subtle re-working of existing space can completely transform a home. The result is a coherent, modern dwelling where architecture, landscape and light come together to support everyday living — calm, crafted, practical and connected to its setting.
